A health warning:

Simon Singh has upset many people with his damning views on holistic treatment. Claire Sawers asks if he has his finger on the pulse of alternative therapy, including: colonic irrigation.

As it is the fastest growing sector of medical spending, with £40bn spent globally on alternative medicine every year, Singh was genuinely concerned about the lack of regulation or clinical testing on treatments.

Fed up seeing bookshops crammed with guides to detox, shiatsu and aromatherapy, but very few serious examinations of their credibility, he and Ernst started a rigorous scientific analysis of the most popular alternatives to conventional medicine. His findings are controversial but revealing, and have already sparked a vicious backlash, particularly from chiropractors who object to many of his damaging conclusions.

Health warning by Simon Singh

Don’t get Simon Singh started on reiki massage. And as for ear candles or oxygen therapy, that’s just one new age, hocus-pocus step too far for the science journalist. Singh, a doctor of particle physics and author of science tomes including The Big Bang and The Code Book, has tackled what he calls ‘the Wild West of health care’ in his latest work, a cross between a handbook and history guide to alternative medicine.

‘It’s a book for patients,’ says Singh, of Trick or Treatment? co-written with Professor Edzard Ernst, the world’s first professor of alternative medicine. ‘We needed to find the truth among all the misinformation, so people can make informed decisions about their health and avoid therapies they don’t realise might be dangerous.’ As it is the fastest growing sector of medical spending, with £40bn spent globally on alternative medicine every year, Singh was genuinely concerned about the lack of regulation or clinical testing on treatments.
St John’s Wort is proven to be an effective treatment for mild depression, and he concedes massage and aromatherapy are good stress-busters. But professionally speaking, he cannot take the likes of detox, colonic irrigation, spiritual healing or reflexology seriously until therapists can produce convincing evidence of the benefits.

‘Why is there not a level playing field?’ he asks. ‘Drug companies need to convince authorities a pill is safe before they supply it to the public, but anyone can put a sign in their window and claim to be a homeopath who can cure fertility issues, weight problems or skin disorders. Any great claim requires great evidence.’

Singh admits he would turn to alternative medicine only ‘as a last resort’ and believes a healthy lifestyle is the best solution to many ailments. ‘People need to ignore a lot of this over-priced, made-up twaddle and lie down for half an hour with relaxing music instead.’

While his research is bound to give a headache to complementary practitioners and holistic therapists, his attack on pseudo-science also serves as a useful eye-opener for would-be suckers.

Diet advice cuts colon cancer risk

Colon Health Report:

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Current dietary guidelines are on the right track when it comes to colorectal cancer prevention, new research from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) confirms.

Sticking to diet advice cuts colon cancer risk

Men whose eating habits adhered most closely to any of four indexes widely used to measure diet quality were less likely to develop colorectal cancer, Dr. Jill Reedy of the NCI’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and colleagues found.

“Although these indexes may differ in philosophy and design, they really share a common theme,” Reedy noted in an interview with Reuters Health. All recommend eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy oils; getting enough calcium and vitamin D through sources such as dairy products; and limiting consumption of solid fats, added sugar and red meat, she explained.

“Assessing overall dietary patterns is an important alternative to traditional methods in nutritional epidemiology that have focused only on single nutrients,” Reedy and her team point out in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

She and her colleagues looked at the relationship between diet pattern and colorectal cancer risk in 492,382 men and women participating in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study. They compared participants’ eating habits to Healthy Eating Index-2005, the Alternate Healthy Eating Index, the Mediterranean Diet Score, and the Recommended Food Score.

Over five years of follow-up, 3,110 of the study participants developed colorectal cancer. Closely following any one of the four diet indexes reduced risk of the disease by 25 percent to 30 percent for men. However, the only diet pattern associated with reduced colorectal cancer risk for women was the Healthy Eating Index-2005.

The gender difference may have been related to differences in how women report their food intake, or it could also be because the Healthy Eating Index-2005 is more complex and able to provide a better sense of risks associated with eating extra sugar or solid fat, Reedy said.

Nevertheless, she added, the findings make it clear that following current recommendations for healthy eating may help prevent people from developing colorectal cancer.

While questions remain about how these eating patterns may promote health, Reedy said, the findings confirm that “we can still go ahead and think about changing our eating behaviors and changing our food environment” to make fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other healthy foods more widely available.

Exercise Cuts Colon Cancer Risk

Excercise is a major step in reducing colon cancer risk:

Physical activity is an important step to reduce colon cancer risk. But primary care doctors might not always inform patients about this important knowledge.

Many experts now consider colon cancer a largely preventable disease, but a new study finds that primary care doctors might not always inform patients about one important step they can take to reduce their risk: becoming more physically active.
When researchers analyzed survey data from 1,932 adults who answered questions about colon cancer (or colonic polyps) risks, only 15 percent listed physical activity as a means of reducing their risk.Yet a sedentary lifestyle accounts for as many as 14 percent of all colon cancer cases in the United States. Highly active individuals have a 30 percent to 40 percent lower risk of developing colon cancer, according to the researchers. Several factors contribute to the information gap, according to study co-author Elliot Coups. “Patients may not be learning this information from their health care providers and information regarding colon cancer prevention is not as well publicized as it could be.”The study appears in the August issue of the journal Patient Education and Counseling. Doctors might find it easier to promote the general benefits of exercise, without specifically mentioning colon cancer, even to a patient who has a family history or has other risk factors, said Coups, at the Division of Population Science at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Cheltenham, Pa.“In the context of busy clinic visits, it is in some ways efficient for patients to be reminded that physical activity is good for their health in general,” Coups added. “Going through each specific health benefit of physical activity would take considerable time.”

Doctors might also need to offer more information about what it means to be physically active, as patients could imagine it involves dramatic lifestyle alterations, he said. There is a strong benefit in going from completely sedentary to some modest levels of activity, such as walking two to three hours a week or gardening, said Edward Giovannucci, M.D., a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health. “Sedentary people should first set such moderate, achievable goals. More benefits could accrue from higher levels and more intense exercise, such as jogging, running or tennis. To some extent, more may be better, but it is important to note that a little is much better than nothing.”

Because studies might skew toward cultural norms and 40 percent of Americans never engage in leisure time physical activity, inactivity could be a factor in over 14 percent of the estimated 112,000 cases of colon cancer diagnosed each year, Giovannucci said.

“While many people are vaguely aware that exercise is good, the idea that exercise specifically prevents a large proportion of a common cancer may make an impact on the patient,” he said.

Again: be sure to be informed!

Colonics: how to cleanse your colon

Cleanse your colon:

Colonics is a safe and effective method of cleansing your colon. Colonics can help people to eliminate stored faecal matter, gas mucus and toxic substances from the colon. get healthy with Colon Hydrotherapy, advises Dr Shiny Benedict from Nirmayee Naturopathy centre.

SOURCE:
Many people have pre-conceived ideas about Colonic Hydrotherapy and Colonic Irrigation and imagine the worst, whereas it is in fact a colonic treatment which leaves you feeling clean, revitalized and well. The general consensus among health professionals is that most, if not all, major diseases starts in the colon this is not surprising when you consider that our foods are laced with preservatives, artificial ingredients, hormones and other chemical additives, says Dr Shiny Benedict from Nirmayee Naturopathy centre in Koregaon Park. What is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy or a Colonic Irrigation is safe and effective method of cleansing the colon that can help to eliminate stored faecal matter, gas mucus and toxic substances from the colon. This is done by introducing filtered, sterilized and temperature-regulated water into the intestine where the food waste is loosened and eliminated through natural contractions of the intestinal muscles. Colon cleansing is best when used in combination with adequate intake of nutrients and regular exercise. It discharges stored toxic substances from the intestine through safe and sanitary method. One session of hydrotherapy equals 30 times of enema.

Why should you be concerned?

The colon functions as the sewer in our body and needs to be clean and healthy for the proper functioning of the digestive system. Colon that is the large intestine is about five feet long and gets toxified very easily due to our irregular food habits. Thus it needs to be detoxified. A healthy colon gives a sense of total well being.

How many sessions do you need?

The number of sessions depends on the particular individual as the digestive system varies from individual to individual. Just as exercise is needed on a regular basis for the fitness of our outer body, colon cleansing tones and rebuilds the regimen of the inner body.

Hoe does it work?

A colon cleansing session helps you to dilute the inbuilt toxins in the body and enhances a healthy digestive system. In the process of the colon cleansing water is let into the colon which gently stimulates its natural muscular contraction and releases all the waste. This process is repeated if necessary.

What is the function of your colon?

In general the major function of the colon appears to be: extraction of water and salts from feces. Therefore the colon is a kind of a storage tube for solid wastes.

ABOUT THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COLON:
As you probably know: the large intestine comes after the small intestine in the digestive tract. Usually the large intestine measures approximately 1.5 meters in length. There are differences in the large intestine between different organisms, but the large intestine is mainly responsible for storing waste, reclaiming water, maintaining the water balance, and absorbing some vitamins, such as vitamin K. By the time the chyme has reached this tube, almost all nutrients and 90% of the water have been absorbed by the body. As the chyme moves through the large intestine, most of the remaining water is removed. The bacteria break down some of the fiber for their own nourishment. Acetate, propionate, and butyrate are created as waste products. These are in turn used by the cell lining of the colon for nourishment. This is an example of a symbiotic relationship and provides about one hundred calories a day to the body.
