Colonics & digestive problems!

![]() Colonics may help to dissolve your digestive problems. |
About colonics & chronic constipation If you’ve been putting up with digestion problems like irritable bowel syndrome or chronic constipation, there is a form of therapy out there you might not have tried. It’s called a colonic and it cleanses the colon in a way that a laxative cannot. |
|
Patsy Riley has suffered from digestion problems for years. So every year for the past five years she has undergone colon hydrotherapy, also known as a colonic. At the office of Lillian B. Hollinger Inc., colonics are performed daily by colon hydroptherapists. This is a procedure that dates back thousands of years but has recently regained popularity. Hollinger says they may not solve the problem for everyone.
In Hollywood, some movie stars are swearing by frequent colonics as a weight loss tool. Dr. Homer Feree says that is not the right reason to get a colonic. Dr. Feree says it should start from the top, by eating a healthy fiber rich diet and drinking a lot of water. But there are certain cases when a colonic can be helpful. The process of getting a colonic can be scary to those unfamiliar with the process. For Patsy Riley, she has learned that she is allergic to several foods by getting a colonic annually. She also says it is not an uncomfortable procedure. The procedure takes about an hour. If you have a colonic, it is recommended you take a probiotic every day for about two weeks. This could be in a pill form or you can get a probiotic yogurt such as Activia. Dr. Homer ferree suggests you incorporate probiotics into your diet anyway, especially if you have digestion issues. Colonic side effects can include fatigue and even nausea but many patients claim to feel euphoric and have more energy. A colonic is about $70 per session and insurance does not currently cover the procedure. Dr. Feree recommends you talk to your doctor before getting a colonic. MORE DIGESTIVE & COLON SOLUTIONS:

BASKETBALL FINGERS, COLONIC ENEMAS & FAT!
About finger length & your physical workout!
November 19, 2008 Why basketball players have big hands, or people with big hands play basketball. And why some people voluntarily participate in intense physical exertion, and others don’t. |
The good news is: this means that if you absolutely detest exercising, it may not be due to laziness or lack of willpower; it might be that you have low ‘digit ratio’: your index finger is short compared to your ring finger.
It may sound incredible, but another implication of the research may be that your finger length might provide you information about whether you are more likely to lose weight with a game of Basketball … or whether a colonic enema would be more effective for you!

Irritable bowel syndrome is center at Yakult symposium!

![]() Yakult: the probiotic milk drink. |
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects up to 25% of the world population and roughly one in five Americans. It is caused by an inflammatory reaction in the intestines, often triggered by stress, and results in a change to gut microflora. These mechanisms and other new discoveries about the brain-gut relationship were presented to a packed room of more than 500 attendees. |
|
On friday 31 october the 17th Annual Symposium on Intestinal Flora at Yakult World Headquarters Hall in Tokyo gathered physicians, researchers and company associates from 19 countries, including the U.S. This year’s theme, “Intestinal Microbiota and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders” focused on brain-gut interactions and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is believed to be the “entry illness” that leads to various digestive diseases.
Yakult Honsha Ltd., Co. developed the symposium in 1992 when probiotics research gripped doctors and scientists abroad. Since then, it has become one of the world’s most prominent forums discussing the hottest research and advancements in the probiotics field. The symposium is free and open to the public every year; in Japan no registration is required. MORE THE BOWEL & THE COLON:

‘Fasting cleanses the soul and raises the mind!’ – Saint Augustine
November 14, 2008
|
About fasting & colonics The popular detox diets appear to at least some religious origins. Saint Augustine once said that “fasting cleanses the soul [and] raises the mind.” Were he alive today, he might be surprised to see the fast detached from its spiritual roots and transformed into little more than a quick ticket to weight loss. Taken up by the likes of Beyoncé Knowles and Madonna and splashed across the pages of gossip magazines and Web sites, these “detox diets” or “cleanses” are everywhere. Publishers are churning out books like “The Fast Track Detox Diet,” “The Raw Food Detox Diet,” “Super Cleanse: Detox Your Body for Long-Lasting Health and Beauty” and “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.” |

The concept behind these cleanses is as old as human history. “There’s a straight line from detox diets to classical religious fasting,” says Harvey Cox, professor of divinity at Harvard University. In many religions, fasting is associated with enlightenment and atonement and understanding the suffering of the poor. “It’s a way of resetting one’s moral clock, of starting with a clean slate,” says Michael McCullough, a psychology professor at the University of Miami.
Christians fast during Lent, Muslims fast during Ramadan and Jews fast on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement that follows the New Year. “Fasting builds self-control,” says McCullough. “It allows people to build strength for when they have to adhere to some other moral dimension of their religion.” READ FURTHER ABOUT COLONICS & CELEBRITY DETOX: * Source: Newsweek |
Colonic polyp question at Irishtimes.com!
November 12, 2008
![]() What is a colonic polyp? |
QUESTION: I am 55 years of age and have had a colonoscopy and biopsy of a large polyp in my bowel. My father died of colon cancer at age 60. I am concerned this will be cancer and if so what are the implications? |
|
ANSWER: A Hopefully your results will show a benign polyp, but even so the entire polyp will need to be removed and fully examined and you will need further colonoscopies in the future to determine if you have developed more polyps. Your situation highlights the importance of colonoscopy (telescope test of the bowel) especially with a family history of colorectal cancer.
Colonic polyps are small benign growths on the inside lining of the bowel. If undetected, they can gradually enlarge over many years. If left untreated the cells within these polyps can change (dysplasia) and ultimately turn into invasive bowel cancer. Once cancer develops there is potential for spread outside the bowel. Routine colonoscopy before the onset of symptoms, with identification and removal of polyps, can prevent cancer. Colonoscopy is essential for those with a strong family history of colon cancer and in some countries routine colonoscopy for everyone over the age of 50 years is recommended. Should your biopsies demonstrate cancer you will need referral to a specialist colorectal surgeon for investigation and treatment in a centre with full modern diagnostic and therapeutic facilities where a specialist multidisciplinary team with expertise in bowel cancer will co-ordinate your care. This team will include cancer surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, radiation and medical oncologists. Scans will be performed to assess the extent of the tumour and potential spread to other organs. A CT scan is often sufficient but more detailed scans such as MRI or PET/CT scans may be required. Based on your investigations your team will recommend a plan of treatment designed to optimise long-term cure. Most patients will initially require surgery to remove their tumour and subsequent chemotherapy may be required. With tumours of the rectum, or lowermost bowel, treatment is more complex and many patients will have radio- therapy and chemotherapy to shrink the tumour initially and then have surgery to remove it. Surgery for cancer of the colon or rectum can now be performed in up to 90 per cent of patients using laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. This technique allows removal of the colon without opening the abdomen and results in a much faster and easier recovery with a shorter hospital stay, reduced risk of complications and speedier chemotherapy if required. Advances in diagnosis and treatment are gradually improving outcome and more than 50 per cent of patients are fully cured, the chances of cure being much better the earlier the cancer is detected. After treatment your surgeon will recommend a routine schedule of long-term follow-up including regular examination, scans and colonoscopies. MORE ABOUT THE HEALTH OF YOUR COLON:

DNA link between obesity & colon cancer!
November 11, 2008
![]() Obesity above waiste (apple) vs. obesity below waiste (pear). ![]() Colon cancer studied with colonoscopy. |
People with a common genetic variation in their fat cells may have some protection against developing colon cancer, according to a study that provides the first DNA link between the deadly tumors and obesity.
Fat cells produce adiponectin, a hormone that appears at lower levels in people who are obese or have diabetes. It also can be found within the colon, where it seems to help regulate cell growth. Obesity and colon cancer are known to have genetic ties, so the researchers homed in on the common ground between the two conditions. |
|
The study, comprised of reviews of colon cancer patients and healthy comparisons in New York and Chicago, found those with a variation in the adiponectin gene were almost 30 percent less likely to have the tumors.
The results in the Journal of the American Medical Association may one day help doctors fine-tune screening for colon cancer, the second deadliest malignancy after lung cancer, the researchers said. “If you enhance your ability to screen these higher-risk individuals, you may have a greater chance of picking up the disease at an early stage and preventing them from dying of colon cancer,” said lead investigator Boris Pasche, director of hematology and oncology at the University of Alabama. “That is the hope.” Colorectal cancer is diagnosed in more than 100,000 people in the U.S. each year, making it the fourth most common tumor in Americans, according to the American Cancer Society. Nearly 50,000 Americans die from it annually, even though the disease can be prevented if caught early when precancerous lesions are first developing. Fewer than half of people who should get screened each year actually undergo the tests, research shows. Additional work is needed to determine if genetic tests to help identify people who need earlier, more frequent screening can save lives, the investigators said. Colonic irrigation remains controversial!
November 10, 2008
![]() Colonic irrigation remains controversial. |
QUESTION: A friend of mine recently told me she was getting colonic irrigation. She is generally healthy but had been feeling run down. After three sessions, she felt much more energetic and believes that the treatment removes toxins from her body. Is this true? Is colonic irrigation safe? |
|
ANSWER:
Colonic irrigation, also called colonic hydrotherapy, is a variant of enema treatment, which involves flushing the bowel with water in different quantities, temperatures, and pressures. Through a tube inserted via the rectum, water may be introduced alone or with added enzymes, coffee, probiotics, or herbs. Treatment sessions usually last about one hour. Colonic irrigation may have been used as early as ancient times in Egypt, China, India, and Greece. This practice gained some popularity in 19th century European spas. Without scientific evidence to support the claims, colonic irrigation has been promoted in modern times to improve general well being and suggested as a treatment for cancer and other diseases unrelated to the lower intestine. Colonic irrigation should not be used as the sole treatment (instead of more proven therapies) for severe conditions, and it should not delay consultation with a qualified health care provider for a potentially severe symptom or illness. In my opinion, the evidence to date does not support the use of colonic irrigation as a way to promote better health and prevent disease. Although rare, serious complications can occur. Celebrity’s colon cleanse
New York (ANI): As more celebrities jump on the detox bandwagon, it’s also catching on with the general public. But some medical experts say these body-cleansing diets are not only unnecessary, they can also be dangerous. Dr. David Robbins, at Beth Israel Medical Center, said that detox diets do not work, in fact they can cause more harm than good. “The concept that you need to detox your body like you would take your car for an oil change is entirely off base,” The New York Daily New quoted him, as saying. Here’s how some celeb-tested cleanses measure up. An overview of the very popular detox diets done by large numbers of celebrities: |

Milk recudes risk of colon cancer!

Milk recudes risk of colon cancer!
Research indicates that drinking 1 glass of milk each day will likely help you to lower your risk of colon cancer. This was the overall result reported from 10 large studies: people who drank more than 1 glass (8 ounces) of milk each day, were 15% less likely to develop colon cancer than people who drank less than 2 glasses each week.

Lead researcher Eunyoung Cho, ScD, describes:
“While researchers and physicians do not yet know what causes colorectal cancer, the results of this study have brought us even closer to understanding how to reduce the risk of this disease.” A group led by researchers from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston published their findings in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Vol. 96, No. 13: 1015-1022). Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among both men and women in the United States (excluding skin cancers). More than 146,000 people will be diagnosed with this disease in 2004, and more than 56,000 people are expected to die from it. Doctors know that some food choices — like eating a diet high in animal fat — can increase a person’s risk of developing this disease. But it’s less clear whether specific foods or nutrients can also protect against colon cancer. THE EVIDENCE POINTS AT CALCIUM!! Many studies have examined the relationship between calcium and colon cancer risk, and some have found a protective effect. By looking at data from 10 large studies, the new research provides stronger evidence of that effect. The studies contained information about both dietary calcium — from dairy foods like milk, cheese and yogurt – as well as total calcium – from food and from supplements. Calcium intake overall had a significant effect on colon cancer risk. People who got the highest amounts of total calcium — 1,100 milligrams a day or more — reduced their risk by about 21% compared to people who got only 500 milligrams of calcium a day. When the researchers examined the effects of calcium from food alone, only milk had a significant effect on colon cancer risk. However, milk was the most common dairy product consumed; fewer people ate yogurt or cheese, so if those foods had an effect it may not have been apparent in the analysis. The calcium in milk may not be the only nutrient at work, though. Milk also contains vitamin D, which may also have a protective effect. Or the two nutrients may work together to provide protection. It is difficult for researchers to tease out the effects of individual nutrients, especially when found in the same foods.
